In 1999, Philippine Recyclers’ Inc. was certified ISO14001, the benchmark standard for environmental compliance in heavy industries. There are only four ISO14001 Certified Lead recycling facilities in the world, and PRI was the third of those four, and the only one in Asia.
PRI’s process involves a battery crusher called the M.A. 41, which reduces the junk but intact batteries to slag which is then placed in a vat of liquid. The heavier Lead and other metallic particles naturally sink to the bottom, while the lighter plastics float on the liquid and are easily separated. The Lead is further segregated and smelted in a blast and a reverb furnace. The final result is recycled Lead which is equal to pure Lead in quality.
The acid goes through a desulfurization process and is certified free of toxics before being released into the local sewer system.
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES – ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT BUREAU
The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) is a line bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) tasked to implement the following five major environmental laws:
RA 8749 - Clean Air Act of 1999
-
RA 9275 – Clean Water Act of 2004
-
PD 1586 – Philippine Environmental Impact Statement System
-
RA 6969 – Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990
-
RA 9003 – The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000
Executive Order No. 192 also mandates the EMB to formulate and implement comprehensive plans, policies, projects and activities for the prevention and control of pollution and protection of the environment and to conduct education and information campaign, provide research and laboratory services and to adjudicate pollution cases.
EMB envisions a nation empowered to protect our finite natural resources, attuned to the pursuit of sustainable development, for a clean and healthy environment that enhances the Filipino quality of life for present and future generations. To achieve this, the bureau works in partnership with all other sectors to restore, protect and enhance environmental quality towards good public health, environmental integrity and economic viability.
